The
Le Vin Family Wine Business has
been in existence since 1983—originally founded
by Bernard and Ellen Levin after he had retired. Bernard
was a friend of Stephen
Zellerbach whom he knew from the Actor’s Workshop at
the Marines Memorial Theater in San Francisco and from the
San Francisco War Memorial Opera House where Bernard worked.
Bernard and Ellen Le Vin were friends of Charmian London
in the 1940's and visited her at the Jack London Ranch on
weekends. Bernard and his son Eric Levin began making award
winning wines at Zellerbach Winery in 1983. In 1985 Le Vin
Cellars received its first Gold Medal for its Cabernet Sauvignon
at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair. In 1987 Le Vin Cellars
wines were distributed in Japan. In 1993 the Levin’s
and the Harman’s purchased this164 acre ranch in the
scenic Yorkville Highlands Appellation of Mendocino County,
that is today Le Vin Estate Winery & Vineyards. They
planted 5 acres of Merlot, 5 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon,
3 acres of Cabernet Franc, 3 acres of Syrah, 250 olive trees
and 125 redwood trees.
In 1999 Le Vin Vineyards released its first Cabernet Sauvignon
and Merlot harvested from their beautiful 16 acres of vineyards.
The Cabernet Franc and Syrah grapes are blended into the
2000 Le Vin Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Le Vin highland
mountain vineyards rise up 1550 to 1900 feet above sea
level, closer to the sun and above the fog, which results
in the full and delicious wines that have made the Le Vin
wines so loved and sought after.
The girl holding the grapes in her hand on the Le Vin
label was illustrated by Stephen Haines Hall, the well
known wine poster and label artist. She symbolizes the
romance of wine, olive oil, delicious healthy foods, and
living the good life in harmony with nature.
